Karl Lagerfeld, a German fashion designer living in France, began his career as a couturier with Jean Patou while working as a freelance stylist for French, German, Italian and Japanese houses. In 1983 he took over the artistic direction of the Chanel fashion house which he will put back on its feet and run until his death.
