Inspired Homes / 7 – Gustave Courbet’s

-

It is in an austere house, at he edge of the Loue, that Gustave Courbet was born and raised.

Nicknamed “Little Venice Comtoise” Ornans surprises with its houses on the Loue. It is in one of them, the Hotel Hébert rue de Froidière, that Gustave Courbet was born into a wealthy family of landowners. He spent his first years there, and returned to it again and again. Master of the realistic current, this son of the land who wanted to be simply “free” painted all his life the landscapes of the Valley of the Loue, the peasants and the inhabitants of the surrounding villages.

The family house, bought in 1971 by the Association des amis de Gustave Courbet, is now converted in a Museum.
