France drinks too much, said Mendès France, and produces too much milk. So, he decreed milk in schools. A social worker had found us (for Look magazine) a little family, well soaked,  in the southern suburbs. Dad was serving in the police, Mom in a trucker’s van, and the kids were laying the bourguignon on the table between three bottles of picrate: Dad poured a general chabrot, as he did every night! I stayed a fortnight until the first obligatory glass of milk. All three children threw up: none of them had ever drunk milk! As a bonus, the boy got a pair of slaps in the face! The story won me a prize, plus a reprimand from the Elysee spokesman: “Boulat prefers the green dollar to the tricolor flag”.
