Inspired Homes / 5 – Edmond Rostand

-

His vast Basque house of Cambo-les-Bains is home to the most Parisian palace.

It is in Cambo-les-Bains, on the edge of the Nive, that Edmond Rostand, born in Marseilles, settled at the beginning of the 20th century, to shelter his immense glory. In 1902, he bought a large piece of land and undertook the construction of a castle camouflaged in harmless Basque farm. Three years to build “Arnaga” – the name of a torrent – erect the walls, decorate the interior by appealing to his painter friends, and, keen of gardening, draw the park and choose the trees. In this refuge, which the City Council of Cambo-les-Bains made a museum, the author of “Cyrano de Bergerac” and “L’aiglon” came to cure his chest weaknesses and his neurasthenia.
